College-level courses at Kittay House Senior Apartments

The Great Courses Series Brings Ivy League Professors to Kittay House Senior Apartments

For tenants at Kittay House Senior Apartments, an Ivy-league caliber education is now one of the perks of their senior community. Lectures from The Great Courses series are now part of the Kittay roster of activities, thanks to funding from Edna and Mort Nelkin, both Kittay tenants.

The series of presentations, each hand-picked by the Nelkins from a catalog of thousands, is produced by The Great Courses, a company that engages professors from the most prestigious universities across the country like Harvard, Stanford and Princeton. To the delight of the Nelkins’ fellow tenants, this nonagenarian couple is generously funding a full year of weekly college-level video and lecture courses.

Edna Nelkin gets teary-eyed when she talks about her strong desire to enrich the lives of her friends and neighbors with an upcoming self-funded series of fun and exciting programs. “All our lives, my husband and I subscribed to engaging cultural and lecture series. The thrill of learning became our passion. Though we’ve slowed down a bit, we haven’t stopped living and still crave culture in our lives,” she says.

The series launched in November of 2011 with “Shakespeare: The Words and the Actions,” where a professor was paired with two Shakespearean actors to bring the lecture to life.

In early 2012, the second 12-presentation series, The Theory of Evolution: A Theory of Controversy, will debut.

Edna and Mort beam when they describe the third series, Doctors: the History of Scientific Medicine. “Can you imagine learning about the history of anesthesia, the stethoscope and the discovery of circulation? We can’t wait!”
