Kittay House Senior Apartments Offers Yoga for Better Living Series
Yoga is not just for the young. Yoga has been shown to reduce stress, promote healing and increase a sense of well-being among seniors who practice Yoga. Now the power of Yoga is coming to Kittay House.
Starting on Monday, June 25, Kittay House will be offering an eight-week introductory yoga series, Intro to Yoga for Better Living, on Monday afternoons from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. The series will run through August 13.
This special yoga for seniors series will be led by Nancy O’Brien, a certified yoga instructor and yoga teacher trainer specializing in therapeutic and restorative practices. She has developed wellness and yoga programming in senior centers, hospitals and clinics, including Bellevue Hospital’s 9/11 Clinic and Parkinson’s Clinic. She leads the weekly chair yoga for seniors at Manhattan’s Stuyvesant Town-Peter Cooper Village complex.
Arlene Richman, Director of Kittay House, says “we are thrilled to have Nancy O’Brien as the leader of this series, as she is masterful in creating an aura of relaxation in which seniors can experience the benefits of yoga.”
O’Brien’s yoga for seniors sessions have produced impressive results. Following a wellness series she conducted for Riverdale Senior Services in the Bronx, participants reported that they learned to effectively utilize the mind-body stress-reduction strategies. A majority (83%) of the participants reported improved sleep, and 100% of the participants stated they felt more confident in dealing with everyday stress.
“Because this work with elders is so powerful, and Kittay House is known as a pioneer in healthy aging, we will be inviting seniors from nearby NORCS and senior centers to participate in the Yoga for Better Living series on a select basis.”

O’Brien expressed enthusiasm about the sessions at Kittay House, saying “this specially designed series will promote balance, pain management and well-being. The practice of Yoga helps seniors take a more mindful approach to life. It’s such a gift, and I’m delighted to give more elders the opportunity to embrace this powerful practice.”
Each week a different application of Yoga will be emphasized.
