Octogenarian Artist Shows Her Moves at Kittay

The New York Daily News was on hand when contemporary artist Olga Kitt gave a master class for Kittay House tenants last week.

Kitt, herself an octogenarian, initially studied abstract impressionism with Hans Hofmann, and has exhibited a body of work that spans mixed media to graffiti in shows including MOMA and the Whitney.

Her master class was attended by a group of 15 Kittay House artists who meet two mornings a week to work with acrylics, watercolors, pastels, charcoal, graphite, collage and mixed media. Olga Kitt’s master class focused on gesture drawing, a technique which attempts to capture action or movement like that of performers and athletes.

Her own gesture work is now on display at Kittay House. Titled “Meeting the Muses: Dance, Chamber Music and the Great Outdoors,” the current exhibition features 23 pastel drawings of dance and music performances featuring the work of Jerome Robbins, Merce Cunningham, Mikhail Baryshnikov and the Bronx Arts Ensemble.

Kittay House director Arlene Richman, who trained as an art therapist, says she’s passionate about using the arts to “texture life and delight the senses in every way possible” for the residents. “When you’re surrounded by things that are beautiful to look at, enticing to touch and wonderful to hear, life is better.”

The twice-weekly art class plans to host other Bronx artists in the near future.
