One, Two, Cha-Cha-Cha, Multiplied by 65!!

Bronx students at Kittay HouseIn an instant, the Kittay House Fox Auditorium was transformed into a grand ballroom. On January 26th, a group of talented 5th grade dancers from The Melrose School approached the makeshift dance floor, festively attired, of course, to showcase their smooth moves and share their unique artistry to an audience of tenants that beamed throughout the performance. Esther Offman whispered to fellow tenant Florence Mallinger. “They are amazing dancers, and to think they’re just fifth graders!”

The troupe of 65 Bronx students take part in a National arts-in-education program that teaches ballroom dance to 5th, 8th and 12th grade students at schools throughout the country. Kittay House was a lucky Bronx recipient for the presentation of The Dancing Classrooms movement, a not-for-profit project of the American Ballroom Theater Company. Following the performance, there was an intergenerational dance session. Edna Nelkin, Kittay’s surrogate “abuella” became a little emotional as she shared, “It was such pleasure to watch them dance – they bought so much joy. I was so proud of them!”

According to Arthur Heimlich, “These kids brought youthful vitality to Kittay and really were very entertaining and appealing. They reminded me of good memories from my younger years.”
